This is the edited typescript and copies of illustrations for Walter L. Fleming's "General W.T. Sherman as college president: a collection of letters, documents, and other material, chiefly from private sources, relating to the life and activities of General William Tecumseh Sherman, to the early years of Louisiana State University, and to the stirring conditions existing in the South on the eve of the Civil War, 1859-1861" (Cleveland: Arthur M. Clark Co., 1912). Also included is a copy of his 24-page pamphlet, "General W.T. Sherman as college president" (Baton Rouge, La.: Ortlieb's Printing House, 1912).

Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829. He left his widow, Mary Hoyt Sherman, with eleven children and no inheritance. Walter Lynwood Fleming (1874-1932) was professor of history at various universities in the U.S. including West Virginia University, Louisiana State University and Vanderbilt University, in addition to serving as dean of arts and sciences at Louisiana State and director of graduate work at Vanderbilt.
